A three-hour rain on Friday’s afternoon caused flooding and traffic congestion in many areas in eastern Ho Chi Minh City, with District 9 and Thu Duc District being the most affected.
The area surrounding the Rach Chiec Bridge in Thu Duc was submerged under 1 meter of rainwater for hours, stalling countless motorbikes with some being swept and hurled down by the torrent.
Many people had no choice but switching off their bikes’ engine and walking the vehicles over the inundated areas.
Many streets in District 9 including La Xuan Oai, Do Xuan Hop, and Le Van Viet also fell victim to the deluge, with numerous trucks stalled in the water.
Bikers and motorists had to deal with strong water currents at various hilly areas of Vo Van Ngan and To Ngoc Van Streets, with heavy flooding culminated near the Thu Duc Market.
Severe flooding was observed until 5:00 pm in several streets in Thu Duc and District 9.
While descending a steep road in front of the Saigon Hi-Tech Park in District 9, a truck lost control and capsized, with its container thrown away and the driver rushed to hospital with severe injuries.
Following the rain, various areas in Tan Binh District underwent heavy congestion with Lang Cha Ca Roundabout being the most affected.
A section of Cong Hoa Street near Hoang Hoa Tham Overpass also had congestion which was not alleviated until 8:00 pm.
Congestion did not spare the intersection of Au Co and Truong Chinh Street in Tan Phu District, causing inconvenience and annoyance to countless drivers.
